According to data from the Storm Prediction Center, there were 30 preliminary tornado reports during August, compared to the 1991-2010 average of 83 for the month. Given that the final tornado count is typically less than the preliminary count, the number of August 2014 tornadoes will likely rank as one of the 10 lowest in the 1950-present record, and the lowest since 1967. No significant tornado outbreaks were reported during the month, with nearly all of thte tornadoes that occurred being isolated and weak. There were no tornado-related fatalities reported. The August 2014 tornado count brings the year-to-date preliminary number of tornadoes to 755. There were 309 confirmed tornadoes for January-May, with 446 tornado reports still pending for the June-August period. The 1991-2010 average number of tornadoes during the January-August period is 1,035.
