Year-to-Date Evolution of Temperatures

« National Overview - April 2012

Year-to-Date Evolution of Temperatures

Numerous cities broke temperature records for January-April (year-to-date, or YTD). The following map and table present some of these record averages. Each city listed observed its warmest YTD period. Also included are the running minimum and maximum temperatures with respect to the top 5 average YTD temperatures.

How to interpret this data. The data are presented in a horserace format, where the trace represents the year-to-date average through that date, rather than the single value observed on that day. Because of this, the left-most places on the map (which include an average of just a few days) are quite noisy.

Note: These data are preliminary and limited to some of the stations which have observed their warmest YTD period. Many stations still report via paper and U.S. Mail, and were not considered for this list. Some locations on the map may not be accurate.
