« National Overview - Annual 2012

Warmest Seasons and Calendar Year Periods on Record

2012 was the warmest year on record for the contiguous United States, and was also the warmest on record for several states and regions. The following tables show the ten warmest years (on the right) and the ten most anomalously warm seasons (largest difference from the 20th century average, for that season) for each of the lower 48 states, and several larger regions. The 2012 value is highlighted. It is important to note that in most places, winter temperatures are more variable than summer temperatures. Therefore, it is not surprising that winter is prominent in most of the states' lists. Note: 2012 data are still considered preliminary. More final data will be available within months.
