These images have been produced to show the type of climatic and land cover environments represented by operational stations. The USCRN program adheres as closely as possible to Climate Principles endorsed by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) in choosing these sites, while also meeting engineering and logistical requirements. Operational stations have spatial representativeness and temporal stability as their primary goals and are located in areas that are unlikely to change much in the next several decades.
